I am a second-year undergraduate cell biology student at the University of Alberta. My interests range from biomedical research, to music, and to mentorship.
I began working under the mentorship of a lab at the University of Alberta during high school. There, I had the amazing opportunity to learn about biomedical research, to work on a number of projects, and to present some of these projects at regional and national science events. I was also a member of the 2015 Heritage Youth Research Summer program and worked as an intern under Alberta Innovates Health Solutions. In my senior year of high school, I had the privilege of attending the Canada Wide Science Fair, where I was awarded a gold medal in the senior category. In addition, I competed in the Sanofi BioGENEius Challenge, where I placed first in the Alberta Regional competition. Upon starting my undergraduate studies, I have continued conduct research in labs over the summer.
Aside from academia and STEM, music has played a large role in my life growing up. I was first trained classically in piano and then began playing the trumpet in my junior high jazz band. This experience sparked my interest in jazz music, leading me to audition for and play in the Little Birds Band- a city-wide youth jazz band supported by the Edmonton Jazz Society. I was a member of the band from grades 11 to 12, and in my last year, I played as one of the lead trumpet parts.
Describe one transformative experience that you have had.
In the summer following grade 10, I attended the University of Toronto's Youth Summer Program and completed a module in microbiology. In addition to learning about undergraduate science programs and labs, the biggest takeaway for me was the experience of traveling and meeting many amazing people. The program brought together students not only from across Canada but also around the world. I made a number of friends there that I still keep in touch with, who continue to inspire me today.
