My name is Loukman Ghouti (Luke for short) and I am a first-year science student at Dalhousie University. In the future I hope to be employed in the healthcare field, but for now I am still exploring my options.
Although I am heavily committed to my education, I also devote a majority of my time to extracurricular activities. On campus, I have recently been involved in two opportunities. The Dalhousie Shine Squad, which strives to raise awareness and funds for Cystic Fibrosis and the Student Food Market. I also recently become a member of the Dalhousie Equestrian Club. Off-campus, I have been extensively involved in the community. Since February, I have committed my time to working with the Immigration Association to help welcome Canada’s new-comers, this has been done through planning multicultural events as well as providing translation services to those in need.
In the health sector, I have recently been involved in opportunities which help provide assistance to the local hospitals. These opportunities include assisting a physiotherapist at a Veteran’s hospital and also helping plan recreational activities for patients suffering from dementia. Recently, I have been selected to become a member of the National Youth Advisory Council of Canada. This active group is engaged in research and support for youth who are faced with issues related to mental health and substance abuse.
In addition to my volunteerism, I also enjoy spending time doing some of my favourite hobbies. This includes reading novels from a “50 Must-Reads before you die”, watching short Operettas, riding horses and sketching scenes which spark my interest. Additionally, I am also very intrigued by linguistics! So far, I speak and write English, French and Arabic. One of the things that I absolutely love doing is meeting new people! I truly enjoy making new friends wherever I can and learning more about certain people.
Throughout my life, my older brother has always been a sort of mentor me. I certainly do hope that my past and present experiences will allow me to offer the same form of mentorship to someone else irrespective of what academic level they are in. Please do feel free to contact me about any questions or concerns that you may have!
Who inspires you? What advice or insight did he or she provide you with?
I am greatly inspired by my mother. Her life story is truly book-worthy. Growing up in a conservative country, education for women was rather insignificant. Many were forced to stay at home and abide by laws that oppressed them. My mother refused to be drafted into that sort of confining lifestyle. Upon her entry into post-secondary education, she excelled in all fields in order to fulfill her dream, a career worthy of respect. She studied fervently in unfavorable conditions to enroll herself in medical school. Upon completion, she went further. She continued her education and specialized in cardiology. By the time she had completed her specialization, her brothers were awestruck. They simply could not believe that a woman could make it that far. This story has always inspired me. She has endured so much only to prove to her family, as well as the surrounding society, that women CAN excel! One thing which she has implanted in my mind is that no matter where you come from or what you are, you can always transcend. Ever since I was a young boy, I have always dreamed of following in her glorious path. She is and will forever remain to be my greatest inspiration, for she has taught me that with hard work, anything is possible!
What are somethings you would really like to share with others?
One thing that I would really like to share is my specific path to post-secondary education. It can be a rather tremendous transformation from high school and I think that every student needs someone to be there for that change. Also, I would love to share my path throughout my high school career. This would include involvement around school, how to remain at the top of your classes and last but not least, time management!
What are you passionate about?
I am passionate about numerous things! Save for the few mentioned above, I absolutely love traveling. Thus far, I have set foot on every continent except South America and Australia (which are still on the list).
